The Work Sheet is the primary mechanism for interacting with your song in Songtrix.
It is used in Mixer View and Track View to display and navigate the song and its structure. It also appears within the Import Midi and Exchange Tracks processes.
The main feature of the work sheet is the framework, whose rows are the tracks of the song, and whose columns are the bars of the song.
The framework can appear either as wrapped lines (in Mixer View) or a single long line (in Track View).
Focus Navigation
The focus cell in the framework is the target of many of the commands in Songtrix.
You can move the focus to whichever part of the song you want to work on, using the mouse or any of these keystrokes.
Up - to the track or line above
Down - to the track or line below
Left - to the prior cell
Right - to the next cell
Shift+Tab - to the prior cell or track
Tab - to the next cell or track
Pg Up - to the line above
Pg Dn - to the line below
Home - to the start of the line
End - to the end of the line
Ctrl+Home - to the first cell in the song
Ctrl+End - to the last cell in the song
Auditioning Cells
Most cells audition themselves when they receive the focus as you click on them.
You can also audition any cell, without changing the focus, using the middle mouse button, or Ctrl and the left mouse button to get a pointer as shown.
Range Selection
A range of the framework can be selected by extending the focus cell either horizontally or vertically (or both), using any of these methods:
• You can click and drag directly with the mouse across a range of cells (even across lines).
• Shift+Click selects the range cornered by the target cell and the current focus cell.
• Using any of the navigation keystrokes while holding down the Shift key will extend or reduce the range.
• Hovering at the top of a bar or the start of a track gives you an arrow which will select the whole bar or track. You can sweep across several bars or tracks while holding the mouse button down.
Within a range, one cell is always still the focus cell. You can move the focus cell around within the limits of the selected range using the Tab and Shift+Tab keystrokes.
Song Controls
At the top of the framework are the events in the Control track. These include bar numbers, beat markers, time signatures, key signatures, section markers, and tempo and volume changes.
Track Segments
The work sheet is your primary tool for managing the segments of tracks, since segments are not shown in staff sheets. Segment borders in work sheet tracks are indicated with black vertical dividing lines.
The picture above shows single bar segments in the Chords and Drums tracks, and long segments for the other tracks. Segments which continue on the next line are shown ending with a gray, not a black, border.
Stretching Segments
Segments in harmony tracks can be stretched (and shrunk) by hovering the mouse over their borders and dragging with the double which appears.
Right-Click Menu
Work sheets offer a popup menu when you click the right mouse button over them.
This gives you convenient access to some of more useful menu commands.
Harmony Mismatch
If your song includes both a Chords and Scales track, the chords and scales should be related to each other at each location throughout the song.
The work sheet indicates where chords and scales are not related to each other by drawing a red-and-white dashed line between them.
Mixer View
In Mixer View only, the work sheet has a couple of extra features for editing segments.
When the Chords or Scales track has the focus an arrow button appears, which drops down a matrix to select chords or scales directly into the segments of the track.
This is a convenient way to quickly fill these tracks, but you may still need to use the Edit Chord window for details such as its inversion.
When the focus is on an event track, an ellipsis button appears to the right of the focus cell. This is a shortcut for Segment-Edit, and opens the Edit Segment window where you can add or edit the events in the track.
You can also open the edit window for any segment by double-clicking on it.
