The Import Midi process is started from the workspace with the following command:
| Button | Menu |
| File-Import Midi |
A File Open window appears immediately, so you can select the Midi file to import. By default, it will look first in the designated Import From folder.
Once this is done, the process can begin, which consists of three, or sometimes four steps. At each step, the incoming events and properties are analyzed or processed according to a set of options.
Reasonable default options are provided at each step, so reasonable results may be achieved simply by stepping straight through the process, depending on the particular Midi file.
However, if needed, you can view and hear the results at each step of the processing, and then change the options before moving on.
Most aspects of Midi files can be imported, including their notes, controllers, bar structure, lyrics and comments.
Songtrix is based on five sound tracks (Melody, Riff, Rhythm, Bass and Drums) while Midi files may have more. So an important part of the process is selecting the tracks which contain the essence of the music, and possibly merging multiple Midi tracks into a single Songtrix track.
The three basic steps are:
• Source Tracks - select from the Midi file
• Destination Tracks - allocate to the song
• Preview Song - before it is created
If you select the Chords and Rhythm tracks as one of the destinations, an extra step (Extract Chord Rhythm) is inserted before the final step.
Since Midi files contain only simple notes, Songtrix needs this extra step to extract the chords and rhythm events from the notes, and place them separately in their tracks.
The same operation occurs in the Exchange Tracks process when transferring melody events to the Chords and Rhythm tracks.
