The standard Cut, Copy and Paste functions are available in Songtrix. They are accessed with the following commands:
| Button | Key | Menu |
| Ctrl+X | Edit-Cut | |
| Ctrl+C | Edit-Copy | |
| Ctrl+V | Edit-Paste |
These are essential tools for copying and moving around chunks of the song during development, using a temporary storage location known as the clipboard.
They can save much repetitive editing, and give you great freedom to reshape the content of the song. It is particularly handy for adding repeats of whole sections such as choruses.
How To Use
In general, these operations work as you might expect from your experience of other software. A selected range of cells can be copied from a location in a song and then pasted to a different location.
You can also copy and paste between two different songs. This is very useful for borrowing passages or rhythms you have already created. You could even create a special song to use as a clip library of musical phrases.
Since each track has different properties and event types, there are restrictions on how the copied range can be pasted back across the tracks. Also, the bar sizes of the copied range may not fit exactly with its destination.
In these cases, you can select the options for the paste operation using the Paste Special window. This is also opened by the simple Paste command, if there are any complications or ambiguity about your intentions.
Cut and Copy
Both Cut and Copy place the selected range of the song onto the clipboard, a storage area within Windows. The difference is that Copy leaves the selected area unchanged, while Cut clears the content.
In effect, Cut = Copy + Clear. Note that Cut does not remove the selected range from the song. If you want to do this, you can delete the bars afterwards.
Chords and Scales
Normally, the segment structure as well as the content of the copied range is stored on the clipboard. An exception is with a single harmony segment, such as a chord or scale.
In this case, only the chord or scale itself is pasted, regardless of the relative sizes of the source and destination segments.
Most of the harmony tools, including the Notes To Chords and Relations windows, contain Copy buttons which place a chord or scale onto the clipboard. These can then be pasted into the Chords or Scales tracks in the workspace.
Paste Location
When you cut or copy from the song, you need to select the entire range of cells you wish to store.
When you paste, you only need to place the focus at the bar where the pasted range is to begin. You do not need to select the whole destination range.
For multiple copied tracks, Songtrix will automatically paste events from each into the same destination track, regardless of which track the focus cell is in.
For a single copied track, you use the the focus cell to paste the events into a different track of the same type (such as between the Melody, Riff and Bass tracks).
You can control how events are pasted across tracks using the Paste Special window. If you are trying to transfer an entire track, you may wish to use the Exchange Tracks process instead.
