Manuals

The Quantize page appears in the Quantize Track property window (invoked by Track-Quantize) together with the Selection page, which specifies the range of the song to be adjusted.

It also appears in the Adjust Events property window, invoked from segment sheets, when Quantize is selected in the Operation page.

The Quantize operation adjusts the locations and durations of events to bring them closer to the simple fractional divisions of the beat that music is usually based on.

Quantizing can be used to remove or reduce timing deviations in musical passages that have been recorded from a Midi piano keyboard.  While the recording process offers a Snap To Grid option, you have more control if you record events with precise timing and adjust them afterwards.

It can also be used to tighten up the timing of events which have been manually created, or imported from a Midi file.

Bear in mind that too much regularity can make music sound mechanical, as human expression always involves some deviation from the precise time divisions that are indicated by staff notation.

The opposite effect is to Humanize events by adding a little randomness to their timing.

Controls

Quantize To

Specifies the time divisions that are to be used for quantization, and the strength with which events are moved towards these division.

Time divisions are expressed as fractions of a quarter note, and similar choices are available as with staff resolution and segment grid lines.

If you quantize by 100%, all events will be moved exactly to the nearest time division, while a lesser value is a compromise effect.

For example, to quantize by 50% is to move events halfway between their current location and their nearest time division.  This tightens their timing, while still leaving some of the original variation for human expression.

Apply To Locations

Specifies that the locations of events are to be quantized in the way specified.

Apply To Durations

Specifies that the durations of events are to be quantized in the way specified.

At Segment Limits

Specifies what should happen to events whose location would be adjusted beyond the start or end of their segment.

Limit Events - move the events hard up against the start or end of the segment.  This may cause noticeable timing aberrations.

Wrap Events - wrap events around to the start or end of the same segment.  This is appropriate for repetitive patterns, such as in rhythm or drum segments.

Delete Events - delete the events.  Their absence may be noticeable.

Transfer Events - transfer the events to the prior or next segment.  If that is a repeat or autostyle segment, it is converted to a standard segment first, so it can accept the transferred event.
