There is a wide range of operations available for editing events in segment sheets. Most of them require that the events are selected first, and there are many ways to do this.
Creating Events
To create events, you first need to activate the segment tool for the desired event type. Most segment sheets have a range of tools available.
Depending on the situation, you can change tool activation with the Segment menu, the segment bar or the Edit Segment window. You can also right-click over an empty space in the segment sheet to get a popup menu.
The mouse pointer changes to indicate which tool is active, and you can then click-and-drag across the segment sheet at the location where you want the new event. You must always start at the left and drag rightwards.
When you release the mouse button, the new event is created and selected. The same tool remains active in case you want to add another event of the same type.
You can drop the active tool in the same way as you activated it, or more easily with a right-click over the background, or pressing the Esc key, both of which revert to the Selection Tool.
Moving Events
Selected events can be moved with the keyboard. The Up and Down arrow keys move events between segment lines.
The Left and Right keys advance or delay the location of events, respectively. If Snap To Grid is active, or the Ctrl key is also pressed, movement is in large steps of one grid line, otherwise it is by small pixel steps.
You can also move events with the mouse by hovering over the centre of the event to get a four-point arrow, before you click-and-drag.
For multiple selections, you can drag any selected event and all will be moved by the same amount.
Sizing Events
Selected events can be resized with the keyboard.
The Shift+Left and Shift+Right keys shorten or lengthen the duration of events, respectively. If Snap To Grid is active, or the Ctrl key is also pressed, resizing is in large steps of one grid line, otherwise it is by small pixel steps.
You can resize events with the mouse by hovering over a handle on the left or right edge of the event to get a double-point arrow to stretch the event. Stretching from the left edge effectively moves and sizes the event at the same time.
For multiple selections, you can size any selected event and all will be resized in the same way.
Cloning Events
A copy of the selected events can be made easily by cloning them. This is convenient when building repetitive groups of notes, in rhythms for example.
Cloning can be done with the mouse, in the same way as moving events, but with the Ctrl key held down at the same time. A small plus (+) symbol appears in the mouse pointer, and when you drag the selected events, you will be taking a copy of them, instead of the originals.
Right-Click Menu
Editing commands are available by right-clicking over a selected event (or a multiple selection of events) to get a popup menu as shown.
Properties - shows or hide the event properties table.
Change To - converts the selected event to a different type.
Select All - selects all events in the segment.
Select - opens the Select Events window for custom selection.
Make Louder - increases the velocity of selected events by about 5%.
Make Softer - reduces the velocity of selected events by about 5%.
Play - auditions the sound of the selected event (available for single events only).
Adjust - opens the Adjust Events window, where a range of transformations are available.
Delete - removes the selected events from the sheet and discards them.
Cut Copy Paste
The clipboard commands are also available for working with single, or multiple, selections of events.
| Button | Key | Menu |
| Ctrl+X | Edit-Cut | |
| Ctrl+C | Edit-Copy | |
| Ctrl+V | Edit-Paste |
For the Edit Segment window, only the keyboard shortcuts are available.
When copying and pasting events, remember that their location is always relative to the focus bar. Make sure you set this appropriately for the source and destination, so that events are pasted where you want them.
Undo and Redo
When editing events, it is good to know that any changes you make can be undone or redone.
Songtrix maintains a list of your previous actions, so you can explore new arrangements of events knowing that you can put them back if it doesn't work.
In Track View, each change is stored in the main workspace list, but in the Edit Segment window, a separate undo list is maintained until the window is closed, and then the sum of all changes made is entered as a single action in the workspace list.
