The Destination Tracks page appears as the second step of the Import Midi process.
It imports the Midi file tracks selected in the previous Source Tracks step, and lets you decide which song tracks are to receive the events of which source tracks.
You have two main tasks in this step.
Firstly, you should check that the Midi tracks you selected have been imported as you expected, in particular that the events align correctly with the bar structure. This and other issues can be corrected by adjusting the Import Options.
Secondly, you decide which Destination track in the song is to receive the events from the imported tracks. Multiple source tracks can be merged into a single destination track. Percussion tracks (on ch.09) are always merged into the single Drums track.
Controls
Work Sheet
The Midi tracks selected in the previous step are imported and appear in the familiar work sheet format.
The work sheet appears in plain colors, with each track in the framework the result of importing one of the source tracks (although percussion source tracks are usually combined into a single drums track right from the start).
The source tracks are labeled with their Midi track name and/or channel number, but due to limited text size, some labels may have their leading characters truncated.
You can scroll the work sheet horizontally to examine each part of the song, and click on a cell to audition the events in it, just as in the workspace.
Log
At the top left is the count of events in the source tracks which were ignored during the import operation. This is shown in the picture above as Ignored Events : 80. It is usual for some events to be ignored, as not all controller events are used in songs.
However, if the imported tracks do not sound correct, you may wish to investigate further by pressing the Log button to open the Import Midi Log window.
This contains a detailed listing of which events from the source tracks were discarded during the import process, and may help to explain unexpected import results.
Import Midi Options
Many issues occurring at this stage of the import process can be corrected by pressing this button to open the Import Midi Options window.
This contains several options which change the way the import operation is performed. By updating one or more options, you can execute the import operation again to get more satisfactory results.
Destinations
Each of the source tracks can be configured to feed into any appropriate song track, using the series of drop-down lists on the right of the work sheet. These are color-coded for the destination tracks.
Music tracks can be allocated to the Melody, Riff, Ch + Rh (Chords and Rhythm) or Bass tracks. Percussion tracks can be allocated to the Drums track. Lyrics can be allocated to the Lyrics track.
Any source track can be allocated to a destination of (none), in which case their musical content proceeds no further.
You can also allocate multiple source tracks to the same destination track to merge them. You may need to do this if you are attempting to import more than the four music tracks supported by Songtrix.
Merging may change the sound of the tracks, since only the setup (voice, reverb, etc) of the upper track in the work sheet passes through to the destination track. You can move the source tracks up or down to select which one has precedence.
If any source tracks are allocated to the Ch + Rh destination, the import process includes an extra Extract Chord Rhythm step to manage the analysis and conversion of the notes in the source track(s). Best results occur if the source track is playing a predominantly chordal part.
Move Track Up
Exchanges the focus track with the track above it. This gives its track setup precedence, if both tracks are being merged to the same destination.
Move Track Down
Exchanges the focus track with the track below it. This gives the track setup of the other track precedence, if both tracks are being merged to the same destination.
Autoselect
Automatically selects what seems to be the optimum destinations for the source tracks. This is convenient and often ideal, but you may still wish override this to make a custom track mapping.
Generally, Songtrix will feed the track with most concurrent notes to the Ch + Rh destination, the lowest pitched track to the Bass destination, and the other melody source tracks to the Melody and Riff destinations.
Lyric and percussion source tracks can only feed through to the Lyrics and Drums tracks, respectively.
At the start of this step, or whenever the import process is executed again after updating import options, the tracks are initially allocated by Autoselect.
Go To Start
Moves the focus cell in the work sheet to the first bar in the track.
Play All
Starts playback of all source tracks beginning at the focus bar. Playback continues until the end of the song is reached, or until terminated by this or the Stop button.
Play Solo
Starts playback of the focus track only, beginning at the focus bar. Playback continues until the end of the song is reached, or until terminated by this or the Stop button.
Stop
Terminates any playback mode that may be active.
