Songtrix makes up to eight tracks available for use in your songs. They are of several different types, but they fall into two broad categories:
Harmony Tracks - do not produce sound during playback, but define chords and key centres to guide the output and development of other tracks.
Event Tracks - contain the musical events that make up the song. All of these (except the Lyrics track) generate sound output during playback.
Each track is color-coded throughout the workspace, and can be optionally included or excluded with the Song Setup window. All tracks appears in both work sheets and staff sheets within the workspace.
If you wish, colors can be changed in the Display page.
| Track | Type | Sound |
| Lyrics | Event | No |
| Melody | Event | Yes |
| Riff | Event | Yes |
| Scales | Harmony | No |
| Chords | Harmony | No |
| Rhythm | Event | Yes |
| Bass | Event | Yes |
| Drums | Event | Yes |
Track names generally reflect their intended use within a song, but you do not need to be constrained by this. For example, the only difference between the Bass and Riff tracks is their name and color, so they are freely interchangeable.
In addition to these eight tracks, every song has a Control track, which holds the bar structure and control events which affect the whole song, such as key signatures, section markers and so on.
