The process of recording events to melody segments involves most of the standard recording controls and options.
However there are a few aspects which are specific to recording melody events.
Enforce Scales
If your song includes a Scales track to which the melody track is linked, you can have your playing automatically corrected with the Enforce Scales option, found in the Record Options window.
This can help to eliminate any mistakes you make while playing. It also provides a handy environment for safe improvisation - even playing random keys, you can be sure that you won't hit an off-note.
If you play a key which does not belong the key centre in the Scales track at that point, it can be handled in the following ways:
(none) - do not enforce scales, and allow the event to pass through unchanged.
Adjust Accidentals - enforce scales by converting the event to the nearest pitch in the key centre.
Prevent Accidentals - enforce scales by ignoring the event and not allowing it to be captured.
Key Mapping
Piano keyboards and other Midi instruments have different octave ranges, and melody tracks can vary greatly in scope. Songtrix offers a variety of ways to map the physical instrument keys to the segment lines with the Key Mapping option, found in the Record Options window.
Direct Midi - uses the event pitches as they are received in the Midi Input. In this case, some segment lines may not be accessible, depending on the Midi instrument and track scope.
Auto Centre - tries to automatically place the track scope into the centre of the Midi instrument range (as defined in the Record Options) shifting by octaves if necessary. This is usually the best option to select.
Transpose To - similar to Auto Centre but also transposes to a different key, so you can avoid having to physically play in difficult keys. You can select a transpose interval from b2 (1 semitone) to 7 (11 semitones). For example, if you select Transpose To b2, you can record events in the Key of C# (7 sharps) while physically playing in the Key of C (no sharps of flats).
Midi Controllers
Note On and Note Off events received through the Midi Input during recording are normally captured as simple Note events in the melody segment.
However, there are three Midi controllers which can also be captured, and if they are present during recording they will be incorporated into the following advanced melody events:
| Midi Events | Melody Event | |
| Pitch Bend | Bend Note | |
| Mod Wheel | Vibrato Note | |
| Sustain Pedal | Sustain Note |
