The Velocitize page appears in the Velocitize Track property window (invoked by Track-Velocitize) together with the Selection page, which specifies the range of the song to be adjusted.
It also appears in the Adjust Events property window, invoked from segment sheets, when Velocitize is selected in the Operation page.
You can also adjust the velocities of events in segment sheets using the Make Softer and Make Louder commands on the right-click menu.
The velocitize operation affects melody, rhythm and drum events in the selected range, by changing their velocity (or loudness). Velocity can be expressed as a Midi value or percentage, as you prefer.
There are four different types of velocitize operation - Rescale, Gradient, Quantize and Humanize - which are described in detail below.
Statistics of the selected events to be adjusted are shown in the Selection area of the page, to help you decide on the settings to use for your velocity adjustments. These include the event count and their current maximum, average and minimum velocities.
Controls
Rescale
Allows you to raise or lower the overall velocity of the events, and also to expand or compress the dynamic range (the relative difference between the softer and louder events).
When Rescale is selected, a Max and Min field appear at the bottom of the page. They initially contain the current velocity range of the selected events, but you can update this.
When you update the Max value, the Min value is proportionally adjusted, to keep the same dynamic range. If you then change the Min value, the dynamic range will be adjusted too.
Gradient
Allows you to adjust the velocity of the events to a gradient across the selected range. This is a convenient way to implement crescendo, diminuendo, fade-in or fade-out effects for a single track (instead of master volume changes, which affect all tracks).
When Gradient is selected, a From and To field appear at the bottom of the page. They initially contain the average velocity, but you can update this.
The velocities you enter specify the shape of the gradient, and the events within the selected range are given a velocity according to their location within the gradient span.
Quantize
Velocities are stored as a Midi value, and can normally vary from 0 to 127 in strength (optionally expressed in Songtrix as a percentage), giving a smooth range of velocities from softest to loudest.
You can quantize velocities to restrict them to a smaller set of values, with larger differences between them.
When Quantize is selected, a Velocity Increments field appears at the bottom of the page, which specifies the difference between the quantized velocities that the events will use.
For example, if you set this to 20%, all events will have their velocities converted to 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% or 100%, whichever is closest.
Humanize
When you create events in segments, they all start with the velocity specified in the tool defaults. This can make them sound a little mechanical, because the human expression in a real performance always involves small variations in the loudness of each note played.
The Humanize operation adds a little randomness to each event to simulate this effect, producing a performance that is more realistic and satisfying to the ear.
When Humanize is selected, a Velocity Variance field appears at the bottom of the page, which specifies the range across which velocities may be changed.
For example, a variance of 10% means that each event could have its velocity reduced by up to 5% or increased by up to 5%.
