Probably a dumb question

In track view each beat can be divided into parts right? Assuming I'm using 4/4,  if I select 4 parts per beat, does each part represent a 1/16 note?  Also, Can notes be manipulated in staff view?

Hi Joel,

That's correct, chord segments can get progressively split down (with Segment-Split) to smaller sizes if you need to have quick chord changes.

Chord segment boundaries must be on 1/6 of a beat (quarter note) boundaries (or 1/24 of whole note, to put it in your terms).

But the minimum size of a chord segment is 1/3 of a quarter note, otherwise they just get too small to be useful.

At this stage, notes cannot be manipulated in staff view, they are simply updated automatically from the events that you create and edit in Mixer and Track View.

We hope to allow two-way editing in a future release, but since staff notation does not allow the fine detail of editing that the event interface does (eg. fine timing, and the composite rhythm events like strums) there will always be limitations with it.

However some editing functions are still availble in Staff View, such as Cut, Copy, Paste, Clear, Insert and Delete Measures, Section Markers and Tempo and Volume changes.

After re-reading my question, I realize I didn't give the correct context.
I was in track view but entering notes in the Bass line.  Not thinking about chords. Just notes.
If I segmented one beat into 4 parts, not 6 parts, those four parts would be 1/16 notes right? In other words, if I selected the C note on the virtual keyboard that appears on the left and then select the note tool and place a C note in each segment of one beat that has been divided into 4 segments, will those notes appear in the staff view as 1/16 notes?

Why would we want to divide a quarter note into 6 parts? Maybe a drummer might play a double stroke roll in a 12/8 time signiture but other than that, I don't see how dividing one beat into six parts or segments is relevent.
Wouldn't it be better to have it default to 4 segments to each beat? That seems to me to be more closely related to the music world.

1/3 of a quarter note would have to be an 1/8 note tripplet right?

One other thing. I reinstalled the demo version but it crashes.  Have others had crash problems.  I filed a report the first time but didn't bother the 2nd and 3rd time.  Should I perhaps uninstall the demo and then reinstall it?

I see now that I was being redundant. You already answered the question about the 4 segment being 1/16 notes in the staff view!

I really need to understand the logic of dividing one beat into 6 segments.  I don't get that at all!

It's not so much about having tiny chord segments as about the fineness of control of where the boundaries between chord changes are.

Often a song will add tension and rhythm to the music by changing chords slightly off the bar or half-bar boundaries, usually by advancing the timing to preempt the point where the ear would normally expect the change to occur.

Chord segment bounaries are constrained to 1/6 of a quarter note because this is compatible with both straight timing (ie. 6 can be split into halves) and swing timing (ie. 6 can be split into thirds).

This is adequate for the most cases.  If you really need finer control than this, it is still possible, if you double the tempo of the song and double the number of bars you use for each section of the song.

O.K., after playing around for a few hours, this subject is clear now.  This is a great software.  For some reason, the crash and lockup problems stopped.  The Music Theory product coupled with Songtrix helped me put together a cool Blues song.  I would have never known The Blues uses dominant 7th chords without your Music Theory program.
Thanks
