The Record Scale window is opened from the workspace, when the Scales track has the focus, using the following command:
| Button | Key | Menu |
| Ctrl+R | Segment-Record |
It can capture the notes of a melody directly from a Midi keyboard (or other Midi instrument), identify the scale and place it into the Scales track.
Input from a Midi instrument is only available when it is connected to the selected Midi Input device. All keys must be held down for a minimum capture period.
If you are using the virtual Qwerty Keyboard provided by Songtrix for your Midi input, the piano keyboard will include labels to help you remember which keys correspond to which.
Controls
Capture On
Controls whether to actively monitor the Midi Input to detect piano keys being pressed.
This would be usually be on, unless you need to filter out part of what is being played.
Capture
The pitches of the captured keys are displayed in staff lines and analyzed to identify their matching scales, if any.
If there are matching scales, they are shown in the Scales list, with the strongest candidates at the top.
Clear Capture
Clears all captured keys from the staff lines, and removes all matching scales from the Scales list.
Play Capture
Auditions the sound of the captured keys. This can be compared to the sound of the selected scale in the Scales list.
Keyboard
Displays which piano keys are being pressed, in real time.
Can also be used to input the pitches of the melody instead of the Midi instrument.
Scale
Displays the list of matching scales which have been identified for the captured keys. The list is ordered with the closest match at the top, and selected by default.
Each scale in the list displays a percentage which indicates how many of its notes are included in the set of captured keys. For example, the 71% figures indicate they are five out of the seven notes of the scales.
Play Scale
Auditions the sound of the selected scale in the list.
Record Options
Opens the Record Options window, where you can adjust how the recording process works. For scales, apart from the keyboard range, there is only one significant option.
Capture specifies how long the piano keys need to be held down before they are captured. It can range from 0 to 5000 ms. You should use a reasonable value to make sure all keys register when pressed.
Update
Closes the window and places the selected scale into the segment with the focus.
Cancel
Returns to the workspace without making any changes.
