The Normalize page appears in the Normalize Track property window (invoked by Track-Normalize) together with the Selection page, which specifies the range of the song to be adjusted.
It also appears in the Adjust Events property window, invoked from segment sheets, when Normalize is selected in the Operation page.
While there is great flexibility to place notes within segments at any location, and have them last for any duration, this can often be problematic for rendering notation neatly in Staff View and Staff Sheet reports, particularly where a cluster of events overlap, or where several events of different length occur at the same time.
You can use the Normalize operation to allow the creation of much neater staff notation, while having only minimal impact on the sound of the music, since it adjusts only on the duration of the events and not their location. Most options within this process involve managing concurrency, where more than one event happens at the same time.
For heavily overlapped harmonic arrangements, such as arpeggios, it may be necessary to apply Auto Sustain to the track after the adjustment to recreate the original sound.
Controls
Truncate Events To Prevent Overlaps
Reduces the duration of events to remove any section which overlaps any following events which are not concurrent. This is helpful for reducing the incidence of the tied clusters of notes in staff notation that are needed to represent the various time intervals of the overlapping events.
Events are considered concurrent if the difference in their starting location is within the time span selected for Concurrent Events Within.
Extend Events To Align Endings
Increases the duration of concurrent events so that they end at the same time. This is helpful for reducing the incidence of the tied clusters of notes in staff notation that are needed to represent the various time intervals within a group of concurrent events.
Events are considered concurrent if the difference in their starting location is within the time span selected for Concurrent Events Within.
Extend Events To Quantized Durations
Increases the duration of events which do not have a standard quantized duration (Qtn/2, Qtn/4, Qtn/6, etc) to the next available standard duration, providing that this does not create any new overlaps with following events which are not concurrent. This is helpful for reducing the number of fractional rest symbols that are needed represent irregular time intervals between notes.
Events are considered concurrent if the difference in their starting location is within the time span selected for Concurrent Events Within.
Concurrent Events Within
Determines the time span used for deciding whether two events are concurrent, with the three adjustment options listed above.
Truncate At Segment Limits
While it is possible and often useful for events to hang over the end of a segment (and into the following segment) it can also create untidy staff notation. This option shortens the duration of events to make sure that they terminate at the end of the segment they belong to.
