You can quickly create the structure for New Styles using the New Song process, starting with the following command.

ButtonKeyMenu
Ctrl+NFile-New Song

When you select a Song Type of New Style, options appear as shown below.

With these options you specify how your new style will support substyles, time signatures and decorations.

Songtrix can then construct the style layout for you, with appropriate section lengths, marker labels and time signatures.

This is much easier and quicker than doing the style layout yourself, although it can be done manually instead if the options provided are not suitable.

Once the style structure is created, you can start to edit the style events, or simply copy and paste in sections of another song whose musical style you want to emulate.

Options

Substyles

Specifies which substyles which you want to support in your new style.  You must always provide Substyle A, with the optional addition of Substyles B, C and D.

These should be implemented in order, so for example, you should not implement Substyle C unless you are also including Substyle B.

Time Signature

Specifies the primary meter that your style will be designed in.  Usually, this will the standard 4/4 time signature.

If your style design contains only this time signature, then Songtrix will automatically synthesize it into any of the other available time signatures that may be called for in a song.

This is convenient, but results will vary depending on the conversion.  Improved results are usually available (with extra work!) by providing additional explicit samples of the style for one or more additional time signatures.

Time Signature 2
Time Signature 3
Time Signature 4

Specifies any additional time signatures you want to explicitly define in your style.  Structurally, a style can define any number of these, but the New Style process is limited to only four alternatives.

This is usually more than enough, as the ability of Songtrix to synthesize alternatives makes the benefit of defining more than the basic time signatures quite marginal, unless you have a specific application for an unusual meter.

If the primary meter is 4/4, you might consider providing alternative patterns for a Time Signature 2 of 3/4, which provides a native example of triplet-based timing for the style.

Main Length

Specifies the length of the Main sections in the style, as either 1, 2, 4 or 8 bars.  A Main section is created for each substyle you have decided to include.

Longer patterns require more work to design, but allow a more realistic and less repetitive style rendition.

Fill In Length

Specifies whether Fill In sections are required, and if so whether they are 1 or 2 bars in length.

These sections are created for each combination of included substyle with each other.  If you are only defining Substyle A, you will only get Fill In AA.  If you are defining Substyle A and B, you will get Fill In AA, AB, BA and BB.

Intro Length

Specifies whether Intro sections are required, and if so whether they are 1 or 2 bars in length.  An Intro section is created for each substyle you have decided to include.

Ending Length

Specifies whether Ending sections are required, and if so whether they are 1 or 2 bars in length.  An Ending section is created for each substyle you have decided to include.
