The Sounds page appears in the Workspace Options property window.

In addition to the controls shown below, there are extra buttons which are common to all property windows.

This page allows you to change the details of the sounds (such as auditions of chords and scales) that are played as you navigate the workspace.

Controls

Elements

The Elements list contains the various sound elements which can be played as you navigate the workspace.  When you select an element, its properties appear in the Properties area on the right, where they can be updated.

Chord - specifies the Voice, Duration, Octave and Level used for auditioning chords in the workspace (except where the Rhythm track setup overrides these properties).

Chord Arpeggio - specifies the Timing of chord notes when auditioned as an arpeggio.

Chord Strum - specifies the Timing of chord notes when auditioned as a strum.

Metronome - specifies the Voice used for metronome beats (both during playback and with the metronome tool), as well as the Pitch and Level of the standard metronome beat.

Metronome Accent - specifies the Pitch and Level used for the metronome accent (the first beat of each meter).

Metronome Subaccent - specifies the Pitch and Level used for the metronome subaccent (the first beat of each pulse in compound meters such as 12/8).

Scale - specifies the Voice, Duration, Octave and Level used for auditioning scales in the workspace.

Tutorial Sound - specifies the Level used for playing the sounds in the How Music Works tutorials.

Voice

Specifies which voice to use for playing the element.

Timing

Specifies how rapidly the notes of an element should be played.  This applies mainly to chords and scales.  The bpm value represents the number of notes played per minute.

Duration

Specifies how long a sound element should last for when played.  It is measured in milliseconds (ms) or seconds (s).

Pitch

Specifies the exact pitch of a sound element, such as the metronome beats and accents.

Octave

Specifies roughly how low- or high-pitched a sound element should be played.  This is used for elements where the exact pitch cannot be known in advance, such as chords and scales.

Level

Controls the relative sound level (or volume) of a sound element.  This is roughly equivalent to the levels of the song tracks.

Interactive Sounds

Specifies whether sounds are played interactively as you navigate the workspace (eg.  when you select a cell in a work sheet) or whether sounds are played only in response to a explicit play request.

Chords

Specifies how the notes of chords should be auditioned.

Hit - all notes are played at the same time.

Strum - notes are played from lowest to highest pitch.  The speed of the strum is controlled by the Chord Strum element.

Arpeggio - notes are played from lowest to highest pitch and back down again.  The speed is controlled by the Chord Arpeggio element.

Reverb

Specifies the level of reverberation to be added to the workspace and tutorial sounds.  Depending on your selected midi device, this may be applied as global reverb or channel reverb, or may not available at all, even if a non-zero percentage is selected.

This setting does not affect sounds based on tracks of the current song, since these have their own channel reverb and global reverb controls.

Reset

Restores the properties of the selected element to its default settings.

Reset All

Restores the properties of all elements to their default settings.
