The Record Chord window is opened from the workspace, when the Chords track has the focus, using the following command:
| Button | Key | Menu |
| Ctrl+R | Segment-Record |
It can capture a chord inversion directly from a Midi keyboard (or other Midi instrument), identify it and place it into the Chords track.
Input from a Midi instrument is only available when it is connected to the selected Midi Input device. All notes must be pressed at the same time and held down for a minimum capture period.
If you are using the virtual Qwerty Keyboard provided by Songtrix for your Midi input, the piano keyboard will also include labels to help you remember which keys correspond to which.
Controls
Capture On
Controls whether to actively monitor the Midi Input to detect piano keys being pressed.
This would be usually be on, unless you need to filter out part of what is being played.
Capture
The pitches of the captured keys are displayed in staff lines and analyzed to identify their matching chords, if any.
If there are matching chords, they are shown in the Chords list, with the strongest candidates at the top.
Clear Capture
Clears all captured keys from the staff lines, and removes all matching chords from the Chords list.
Play Capture
Auditions the sound of the captured keys. This can be compared to the sound of the selected chord in the Chords list.
Keyboard
Displays which piano keys are being pressed, in real time.
Can also be used to input the pitches of the chord inversion instead of the Midi instrument. In this case, each pitch adds to the captured set, rather than replacing it.
Chord
Displays the list of matching chords which have been identified for the captured keys. The list is ordered with the closest match at the top, which is selected by default.
The notes of each chord which are missing (if any) from the captured keys are indicated.
Play Chord
Auditions the sound of the selected chord in the list.
Enforce Required Degrees
Excludes chords from the list whose required degrees are not present in the captured keys.
Removing the tick from this option will result in a longer list of lower grade matching chords, but it may be useful to explore the full set of chords containing your captured keys.
Record Options
Opens the Record Options window, where you can adjust how the recording process works. For chords, apart from the keyboard range, there is only one significant option.
Capture specifies how long the piano keys need to be held down before they are captured. It can range from 0 to 5000 ms. You should use a reasonable value to make sure all keys are pressed when the capture takes place.
Inversion
Specifies the precision of the chord inversion returned to the workspace and inserted into the Chords track. If Ignore, only the chord itself is used. Otherwise you can have the Bass Pitch or the Exact inversion included with the chord.
Update
Closes the window and places the selected chord into the segment with the focus. This may include the bass pitch or exact inversion of the chord as required by the Record Options.
Cancel
Returns to the workspace without making any changes.
