Manuals

The WAV File Options page appears as the second step of the Export Song process, when you have selected to export a WAV File in the first step.

It offers a variety of options for audio quality and level control in your exported WAV file.

WAV files contain an audio waveform.

Exporting to a WAV file involves capturing the output of the current Midi device playing the selected content of the song.

Waveform data consists of a series of sample points on the audio wave.  If samples are taken more frequently, or if the sample values are stored in greater detail, the audio quality is better, but the file size is larger.

Compact Disc audio quality is equivalent to 16-bit samples taken with a frequency of 44100 Hz.

Controls

Frequency

Specifies the frequency with which waveform samples are taken and stored, with choices of 44100, 22050 or 11025 Hz.

Higher sampling frequencies produce better quality audio but larger files.  Changing this option updates the estimated file size shown below.

Compact Disc audio uses a sampling frequency of 44100 Hz.

Resolution

Specifies the precision with which waveform samples are taken and stored, with choices of 8-bit (256 possible values) or 16-bit (65536 possible values).

Higher precision samples produce better quality audio but larger files.  Changing this option updates the estimated file size shown below.

Compact Disc audio uses a 16-bit sample precision.

Stereo

Specifies whether to capture the left and right audio channels separately to create a stereo waveform, or whether to combine both channels to create a mono waveform.

Stereo sounds better, but creates a file that is twice as large.

Destination File

The name and location of the file you are exporting to is shown here.  Underneath is an estimate of how large the file will be, based on your Frequency, Resolution and Stereo settings.

Browse

Opens a File Save window, where you can select the name and location of the WAV file to export.

Sample Period

Audio is captured in chunks at regular time intervals.  This setting specifies how frequently the waveform chunks are captured and stored to the file.

Depending on your computer speed and sound hardware, you may experience performance bottlenecks causing a stuttering sound or missed audio, in which case a remedy may be found by adjusting the sample period.

Audio Levels

Specifies how you want the volume level of the captured audio to be managed.

Optimal - adjusted automatically, so that the highest level in the capture is scaled to 95% of the total headroom.

Manual - adjusted manually by a percentage gain that you enter.  By default, this is the same as the Monitor Gain used for the level meters on the mixer panel.

Audio Gain

Available only if Audio Levels are set to Manual.  Can vary from 1% to 1000% of the actual captured waveform level.  It is common to use a gain greater than 100% to achieve reasonable audio levels.
