Manuals

Overlay Labels can appear on the fretboard in Library View, Design View, Relations View and Scales View.

They indicate the locations on the fretboard where the notes of chords and scales appear.  The chord or scale is determined by the filter.

Only Relations View can show overlay labels for both chords and scales.  Library View and Design show only chords, while Scales View shows only scales.

The chord or scale of the overlay labels is indicated by the overlay caption, usually located above the fretboard and to the right, as shown.  Notice how the caption is made up from the same colors used for the labels.

There are several options you can use to change the way in which overlay labels operate.  These can be controlled separately for each view, and they are all found in the Layout Options.  There are Tool Bar and menu shortcuts for the most common of these.

Notes and Degrees

Overlay Labels can indicate either the notes or degrees of a chord or scale.  You can show notes with the following command.

ButtonMenu
Filter-Overlay-Note Labels

The Overlay Labels will then appear as shown below (this example is for the C Major scale).

You can show degrees with the following command.

ButtonMenu
Filter-Overlay-Degree Labels

The same Overlay Labels will then appear as shown below.

Colors and Anchors

The illustrations above show overlay labels in full color, where each note or degree is shown in a different color.

However, if you want a simpler display, you can also show all labels in the same color.  By default, note labels are shown in light blue, while degree labels are shown in yellow.

You can switch between single color and full color labels with the following command:

ButtonMenu
Filter-Overlay-Color Labels

If you are using full color labels, you can also specify how the colors are anchored to the notes or degrees.  This setting is found only in the Layout Options.

Anchoring to Notes will always use the same color for the same note, regardless of which degree it represents within a chord or scale.

For example, the note C will be shown with a white label in the Cmaj chord (degree 1), the Fmaj chord (degree 5) and the G Major scale (degree 4).

Anchoring to Degrees will always use the same color for the same degree, regardless of which note it produces within a chord or scale.

For example, the degree 1 will be shown with a white label in the Cmaj chord (note C), the Fmaj chord (note F) and the G Major scale (note G).
