The Orientation page appears in the Workspace Options property window. It can also appear to let you specify a custom diagram orientation for a report.
In addition to the controls shown below, there are extra buttons which are common to all property windows.
The settings on this page determine the orientation of the instrument fretboard and the placement of elements around it. They apply to the fretboard in Library View, Design View, Relations View and Scales View.
The orientation you choose also applies diagrams in to Chord Book and Scale Chart reports, unless you choose a custom orientation from the Diagrams page.
Any orientation is possible. As you make changes to your settings, the Preview area automatically updates with a sample of the new orientation.
Controls
Fretboard
Specifies whether to display the fretboard horizontally or vertically.
The rectangular shape of the screen will generally make a Horizontal orientation look better. For printing, both orientations are equally pleasing.
Bass String
Specifies which side of the fretboard you want the bass string to be on, for instruments such as guitar.
For instruments or tunings where the bass string is not clearly on one side, take Bass String to mean the highest numbered string, which is the string played first with a downward strum.
For Horizontal orientation, the choices are Top and Bottom. For Vertical orientation, this becomes Left and Right.
Head
Specifies which end of the fretboard you want the head to be placed at.
The head of an instrument is the end where the tuning pegs are located, and the frets are wider apart.
For Horizontal orientation, the choices are Left and Right. For Vertical orientation this becomes Top and Bottom.
Note Labels
Degree Labels
Specifies at which ends of the fretboard the note and degree labels appear in Library Viewand Design View.
These labels indicate which notes and degrees are made by each string of the current chordshape.
For Horizontal orientation, the choices for both of these are (none), Left or Right. For Vertical orientation, this becomes (none), Top or Bottom.
Fret Labels
Specifies on which side of the fretboard the fret number labels should appear in all views of the workspace.
For Horizontal orientation, the choices for both of these are (none), Top or Bottom. For Vertical orientation, this becomes (none), Left or Right.
Place Overlay Caption
In most views within the ChordWizard workspace, setting a chord or scale filter will cause overlay labels to be displayed on the fretboard to indicate the locations where the notes or degrees of the chord or scale appear.
At the same time, a caption appears next to the fretboard identifying the chord or scale which is represented by these overlay labels.
The Place Overlay Caption setting specifies whether this caption appears above or below the fretboard, or whether it is hidden (not recommended).
The placement of Fret Labels has priority over this setting, so in Horizontal orientation, putting the Fret Labels above the fretboard will force the overlay caption to be Bottom, and vice versa.
General the overlay caption looks better placed at the Top.
Align Overlay Caption
This setting controls the horizontal alignment of the overlay caption, and can be Left, Center or Right.
Preview
As you make changes to your settings, the Preview area automatically updates with a sample of the new orientation based on the current settings.
At any time, you can press the Apply button to update the workspace in the background and view the actual effect of your changes. Once you have done this, though, you will not be able to cancel them.
Reset
Resets the Orientation settings to the system default settings.
