Using another ins file

A bit confused, the only place I see to select the ins file is
on the song setup, but it only gives general MIDI or custom
I tried opening by right clicking the ins file and using "open with" ............complains about the file format .... probably
expecting a song file

You select the Instrument Definition as part of the Midi Output device options (because different devices have different bank/voice/drum configurations or emulations). So:
Options-Workspace-Midi Setup
Midi Output-Details
Select your definitions in Define Voices/Define Drums
Now, whenever this device is selected, you will have access to its defined banks and voices in the Track-Setup-Controls page.
