Slash Chords

I read and re-read the section about slash cords on the help file ("Sometimes you will see a chord written in the form of Cmaj/G ..."), but no matter what I try or do, I cannot get any slash chord notation to show up on the chord track.  Could you kindly explain, how can I get CMaj/E for example, or even, CMaj/D (root not part of the chord).  Many thanks.

In the Edit Chord window, try to use the Set Bass Pitch, Set Inversion and Custom Inversion buttons. They are explained in Working with Harmony, Editing Chords, Chord Inversions.

Got it! Thank you very much Mr. Uhres!

For the newbies as me, the "Edit Chord" window is accessed by double-clicking the Chord cell.  Search on help for "Edit Chord" for complete explanation.  This allowed me to do any inversions I needed, and also, if I split the cell, i can have different roots on different octaves (which was another thing I was trying to figure out: what if the chords expand more than the two octaves I was seeing).

The only thing I could not figure out (yet) is, how to have a slash chord when the root is different that any of the notes on the chord, eg: CMaj/F.  It seems I cannot select any note, other than the notes that make up the chord, C, E, G on the case of CMaj.

Yes, you could choose Csus4 (=C,F,G) or add your own new chord type in Options, Workspace, Chord Types (Gold edition only).

A couple of extra notes on this topic…

Firstly, the same functions for adjusing inversions are available in Track View, using the toolbar above the chord matrix and the chord panel on the left.

Secondly, it is misleading to express a chord as Cmaj/D (where bass note is not part of chord).  Even though you will often see this form in sheet music, Songtrix requires precision in chord naming and will not allow it.

By adding a D note to the Cmaj chord, you are actually creating a Cadd9 chord.  So you would more correctly achieve this in Songtrix by expressing it as Cadd9/D.
