The slide note tool is working now. I googled for "midi software synthesizer windows 7" and found "VirtualMIDISynth | CoolSoft", which I installed. The tool guided me to some configurations, including soundfont installation. I have chosen the FluidR3_GM.sf2 soundfont. In Songtrix Options | Workspace | Midi Setup, I adapted synthesizer selection. I don't know if it is the best way to do, but the problem seems to be solved.

The different events that Songtrix provides are based on various underlying midi controllers:

Dynamic Note => Expression
Slide Note => Portamento
Vibrato Note => Mod Wheel
Bend Note => Pitch Wheel
Sustain Note => Sustain

So it really depends on the synth, which controllers it supports.

The default Windows DirectMusic Synth supports all these controllers except Portamento, hence your problem.

The good news is that we are currently working on a new version of Songtrix that has its own SoundFont synth, and will also support VST synths, so there will many more options available for voices, and support for a wider range of controllers.

Since I'm new to midi, your explanations are much appreciated. Also glad to hear you are working on a built-in solution!

As to the solution I installed, I experienced serious performance problems and quickly switched back to the default configuration.

What could be the cause for performance issues? Which other synth or soundfont do you recommend for Songtrix?

The performance issue is solved after having changed my computer system. I guess some memory problem or something like that.
