Exporting to WAV file
Posted on 6-Mar-12 00:14Viewed 2436 times
As I have not been lucky with the MIDI export I then tried the WAV export.
The export process goes well and I got a message at the end saying everything was OK.
A WAV file is generated, with th eexpected size.
But when I play it, there is nothing, but some low noise sound.
Any idea about what is wrong?
Best regards, Erix.
Sounds like the capture is working, but the wrong audio input device is selected.
Have a look and see what comes up under Options-Workspace-Midi Setup-Midi Output-Details-Monitor Line.
If you have options here, try them. If you have Vista or Win7 you may not see any options here, in this case, use Control Panel-Sound-Recording to select a different device.
You don't need to record the whole song to know if you have a good selection, the level meters in the popup export window should be active if audio is being captured.
I'm on Win7, so I don't have any option in MIDI Output -> Details -> Monitor Line.
I went to Control Panel -> Sound -> Recording and I have only one device available there, which is the internal microphone on my laptop. There is nothing I can change there.
And now I think about it, it seems to me that what is recorded is the sound coming to that internal microphone. I don't understand why selecting another recording device would change anything. How recording devices ar related to WAV file generation? Do you record the sound that is generated to the default output by the Microsoft Synth?
Just to be sure, I have installed my PCMCIA cardbus sound card on my laptop, so that I can select another sound recorder device.
I configured it to 16bits 44100 Hz, as I've seen this is what you generate.
I selected the device (I even disabled the other one, just to be sure) but SongTrix still generate an empty (bug big) WAV file.
There is one change I've noticed using the other recording device is that the export process says at the end that "it seems only silence has been recorded".
> Do you record the sound that is generated

That is exactly how Export to WAV works. Songrix doesn't generate the sound, the Midi Output device does.
With both hardware sound cards and the Microsoft Synth, we don't have access to the internals of the synth being used, so we must capture the audio output of it just before it goes off to the speakers.
Most audio devices support this, in fact WinXP allowed very precise selection of the recording source (which is the selection on the Monitor Line), such as Midi, Wav/Mp3, "What U Hear" etc.
Unfortunately the Windows audio system was completely rewired in Vista/7 resulting in less information and control being available via Songtrix.
I'm wondering if maybe the problem here is that your device doesn't have internal recording support, or is somehow currently set to record the physical input only. Certainly your laptop looks like it only has basic Mic input capability.
I'm not sure why your PCMCIA card is not working properly with it, does it seems to be working for external recording? Is the correct device driver installed? Etc
I can only suggest try a different audio interface if you have one available. We are planning to revisit the whole audio subsystem later this year, when we add VSTi support.
I agree the default driver for the internal microphone can be limited.
But my sound card is an EMU 1616, quite a decent card.
I know audio in Win7 changed a lot and drivers didn't really adapt to it, yet.
I can record external audio with that card, with excellent quality.
I'm very disappointed, I can't work with either MIDI or WAV export...
I think my config is quite classic: 12 tracks console, Win7, EMU audio, Cubase 4.
I can't believe I can't achieve anything correct in that situation.
I must be doing something wrong...
I understand your frustration.
I feel that we must be able to get this working with MIDI files. This is an operation that is completely within the control of Songtrix and doesn't depend on any hardware features.
Let's pursue this on the other thread you started about exporting to DAW.
I've posted an extra comment there now.
I just found a solution using my software mixer coming with the sound card (EMU 1616).
I'm sending the output of the system audio WAV to ASIO 5/6 and then I create a new audio track in Cubase with input = ASIO 5/6.
It worked.
But I agree with you I'd prefer to make it work at the MIDI level.
when i tried to export my music in mp3, it says "there are no codecs for it currently installed" and i am not able to export it in mp3. Can you help me in this issue.
Just use any of these sites (handy):
