The Scale Matrix in Relations View allows you to select the scale that you want to find relations for.

For a detailed discussion of the music theory behind relations, see Chord and Scale Relations in the Tutorials.

Each cell in the matrix represents the scale based on the scale type in the row heading and the root note in the column heading.  For the example above, the row heading is Dorian and the column heading is D, making a D Dorian scale.

The Scale Matrix is colored red to indicate that it deals with scales.  Many screen elements in the ChordWizard workspace are color-coded in this way.  You can change any workspace colors with the Display options.

Chords and Scales Relations

In the illustration above, the blue dots indicate which scales are related to the chord currently selected in the Chord Matrix.  These scales could be used for improvising over the selected chord in a piece of music.  If no chord is selected in the Chord Matrix, or if no scales are related to the selected chord, the dots do not appear.

In a similar way, by selecting a scale in the Scale Matrix, you will see red dots appear in the Chord Matrix.  These indicate the chords which would be suitable to use when composing music written in the scale.

Selecting a scale in the Scale Matrix also causes Overlay Labels to appear on the Fretboard, indicating where the notes of the scale are located.  You can compare these with the note positions of its related chords, by selecting these alternately with the scale.

Once a scale has been selected, you can change to Scales View to explore and practice positions for playing it.

Fretboard Relations

In addition to Chords and Scales relations, there are two other relation types that you can work with.

In Scales and Fretboard mode, you can place finger blocks on the Fretboard, and the Scale Matrix will indicate green dots instead of red, to show which scales contains the notes made by these fretboard locations.

This is a very useful way to identify the scale of a melody you are playing on the fretboard.  In the other direction, Overlay Labels on the Fretboard will indicate the locations of the notes of the selected scale.

In Chords and Fretboard mode, the interaction is between the Chord Matrix and the Fretboard, and the Scale Matrix is not used.
