When playing in groups, you will usually start by tuning your instrument with the other players, to make sure the music you make together sounds good.
Being able to tune by ear is a great help in getting this part of your rehearsals over with soon, and also helps you quickly detect if one of your strings is drifting out of tune.
The Tuner tool in ChordWizard helps you develop your sense of pitch by acting as a playing partner, plucking each string in turn so you can check each of your strings against it.
You can also use it to make sure you are in tune with ChordWizard, so the sounds you make on your instrument match the sounds that are played in the workspace.
Step-By-Step
Step 1
You can open the tuner with the following command:
| Button | Key | Menu |
| Ctrl+T | Tools-Tuner |
The Tuner window will appear on top of the workspace. It normally starts playing each of its strings in turn, as shown.
Step 2
As each string is played, it flashes green. After each one, you should play the same string of your own instrument to compare whether they are tuned to exactly the same pitch.
You ear's sense of pitch will improve with practice, and you will find this easier.
Step 3
At one end of the tuner's fretboard diagram are the notes that each string is tuned to. At the other end is a small arrow button pointing to each string.
If you want to stop the tuner playing all strings so that you can concentrate on a single string, you can press the arrow button for this string.
The tuner will then play this string only, until you select a different string.
