I first learned to play the Uke at 9 years old, played off and on for 50 years. I got really inspired when I heard Lyle Ritz who plays jazz on the Ukulele. I never took the opportunity to learn how to read music and greatly regret it. I play by ear and try to figure out the chords of a song by listening to the progressions and to determine if it's a Major progression or a Minor progression.
Although, reading music really makes learning music simpler, but I find that learning music theory really gives you a good picture of how music is put together and be more creative with music arrangements. My great interest now, is learning to play lead/improvisation with the Ukulele.
